Lest We Forget

It isn't often that we are encouraged to get up early, especially when early is before the sun has even risen but today is a special day, it is ANZAC Day and we were going to the local dawn service.

Mum woke us super-dooper early, we put on our Scout and Cub uniforms, grabbed a croissant and a banana each before jumping in the car to head down to the local RSL. We (the Scouts and Cubs) had been invited to march with all the returned soldiers and their families before the service and then to go back to the RSL afterwards to have breakfast together.

It makes us really sad to think of all the people who were killed or injured at war but it is important to remember all of the people who have sacrificed so much so that we can be safe in Australia.

Another ANZAC Tradition

I know that there are lots of different traditions that help us to remember the sacrifice that the ANZACs made for all of us.  Today I learnt of a different tradition that is associated with the ANZACs, it is called 2 Up.  Now you would think that since I spent my early morning hanging out at the RSL that would be the place to learn all about 2 Up but it wasn't.

Guess where I learnt all about 2 Up?  At ice hockey.  Now I know you are probably thinking that I am way too young to gamble, but don't worry, we were playing 2 Up as a fun game, not gambling.  See instead of coins, we used hockey pucks.  Everyone had to guess if they were going to land as both heads (both hands in the air), both tails (hands on bums) or one of each.

The pucks were balanced on the end of a hockey stick by Liam (he's the teacher) and then tossed high into the air.  There was no money to win but if you didn't guess right, you had to skate to the other end of the rink and back before you could play again.

It was a pretty simple game and it was easy to see just how much fun everyone could have when the only equipment, other than what we were wearing, was 2 hockey pucks!

Dawn Service

I could say we were up bright and early this morning but it wasn't really bright, it was still dark, it was cold and it was raining.  I was still tired but I got up anyway, I had something important to do; I was going to the Flemington/Kensington RSL to march in the parade and be there for the dawn service.

Even though it was cold and wet, there were still hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects to the diggers who gave their lives to keep our beautiful country free.

Most people don't think that 8 year olds know much but I can tell you that all of the hard work of service men and women all around the world keeps us all safe.

Lest We Forget

At school this week we made wreaths to remember all of the brave people that died in the wars trying to make sure that Australia would always be a safe and wonderful place to live.  

I watched some of the ANZAC parade and ceremony on the TV.   I even tried to stand quietly when they played the last post before the football.

There were a few people at our house for a barbeque and to watch the footy, I watched a bit then played wii for a bit.  I came back inside to watch the important part of the game, the end where the Bombers won and the Magpies didn't (sorry dad).
