Lest We Forget

It isn't often that we are encouraged to get up early, especially when early is before the sun has even risen but today is a special day, it is ANZAC Day and we were going to the local dawn service.

Mum woke us super-dooper early, we put on our Scout and Cub uniforms, grabbed a croissant and a banana each before jumping in the car to head down to the local RSL. We (the Scouts and Cubs) had been invited to march with all the returned soldiers and their families before the service and then to go back to the RSL afterwards to have breakfast together.

It makes us really sad to think of all the people who were killed or injured at war but it is important to remember all of the people who have sacrificed so much so that we can be safe in Australia.

Sundays in my City #21 - Local Creativity

Well it has been a crazy busy week, and a crazier than usual weekend for us that has included 6 hours in the car, a surprise 70th birthday party (x 2), an extra bus trip with family, a visit to a winery, a walking by the lake, making daisy chains and even a spot of relaxing in the sunshine.  Of course, not much of that has been recorded yet but hopefully it will be soon.

In the meantime, is a sample of just some of the creativity I spot when I go for a wander along the river.

I love the collection of handmade ceramic tiles that are fixed to different locations along the way.

 I have to admit that I am not a huge dog person but I would love to find out who the artist is one day and thank them for providing a treasure hunt for me as I wander.   

OK, so this one isn't as creative, but it is new and quite amusing.

And finally we make it to my destination, the Heavenly Queen Temple.  It is still a work in progress but so beautiful.  I can't wait until the temple is complete and open so I can really enjoy the beauty and serenity.

Knitting Big

Look what we found when we went for a walk this afternoon, some giant knitting!

There are a group of artists who are knitting a gigantic blanket for the bridge. We decided to see if we could help them. The knitting needles were too big for us to use so we tried to do some 'arm knitting' instead, like finger knitting but using our arm instead. We were even allowed to get some left overs to make some costumes to wear to the opening of the Big Knit.

An Update Courtesy of a Google Search

Do you remember, way back in May last year that we were fighting to save our park?  If you don't remember, you can read all about our politically active ambitions and the signs we had in our house and in all the houses in the area to help to raise the profile of not building a road tunnel in Kensington.  

Anyway, after all of our hard work the government finally decided that it wouldn't be a very good investment to build new and expensive roads and tunnels that we didn't really need.  The people of Kensington all celebrated and we all lived happily ever after.  

So now we move on to the next part of our story, the Google part...

Well last night dad decided to Google our names and he found Milla's name listed as a part of the 'Submissions in Response to the East West Report'.  Right there, in amongst all of the letters submitted was the picture that Milla drew when she was 4 to say she didn't want a tunnel built instead of a great park.  He looked a little harder and he found my submission too.  This was the very first email that I sent all by myself.  You can tell that I was just a little kid then, I didn't know how to spell!  It really didn't matter about the spelling, you could still tell that JJ Holland Park is cooler than any other park.

Politically Active

Well we were looking forward to a quiet weekend, but then we remembered that there is a No Road Tunnel meeting tomorrow that we are going to go to.  

Although there are hundreds of No Road Tunnel signs around Kensington, some people still want to build the tunnel and dig up our parks.  Pirate Park, known to lots of grown-ups as Holland Park, is far too important to dig up, see...

Help us save Holland Park and the other parks and wetlands that will be ruined to build the tunnel.  Check out the Kensington Association for information on how to save our parks.

Read the Signs

I might only be 4, but I can read some signs.  

This is my favourite sign.

Everyone in Kensington has been sticking signs up everywhere to tell the world that digging up our park for a road tunnel is a silly idea, especially when it is a park that has great stuff in it like the Venny, the soccer pitch, footy ovals, the skate park and the bike track.

Why do we need a tunnel for cars, can't everyone just catch the train instead and then stop at the park on the way home for a play?

Climbing Trees

The giant storm last week made heaps of trees fall down.  One of the trees fell down and landed on the fence near the walkway to school, in the perfect place to stop for a rest or a play on the way home from school.

Trees are so much easier to climb when they have fallen down!

My Backyard

Living in Kensington is fantastic. I don't have a really big yard out the back, but I have the best back yard in the world!

Today after we picked up AJ from school we went to the Venny. The Venny is the most amazing backyard for everyone to play in. There are animals to feed and pat, a vege garden to work in , a tyre swing and best of all a trampoline.When you are tired of bouncing on the trampoline, you can play in one of in the cubby house, ride a bike, explore the castle or even dig in the sandpit.

Even the walk home from the Venny is fun. First we have to walk past the Other Park (the one without a name near Michael and Yasmin's houses), then Sheep Park and finally through Circle Park.

It may not be a long walk home from the Venny, but it sure takes a long time to get there!
